How to choose a good pair of bird watching binoculars:  There are a number of factors you need to consider when choosing a good pair of bird watching binoculars such as cost, level of magnification also known as power and ease of use.

Magnification/Power:  binocular size is always tagged with two numbers such as 7x40 or 10x50.  The first number is the magnification or power, and the second number is the diamater of the objective lens in millimeters.  Your view through a 10x50 pair of binoculars will appear 10 times closer while a 7x40 pair of binoculars will appear 7 times closer.  There are advanatages and disadvantages between levels of magnification.  The lower the magnification, the wider the field of view, and the lens will allow more light  which will make the viewing brighter. This is an important feature to consider where light conditions may be poor such as in a tropical rain forest or while night birding.  Also with a lower magnification  it will be easier holding the binoculars steady, and foucussing on close objected will be easier.   The higher the magnification, the opposite is the case.  With all this taken into consideration you may prefer 10x over 7x .  This would be appropriate for viewing distant birds such as shorebirds.  If you require a higher magnification than 10x you should consider a good spotting scopeWhat bird is he watching?

Objective Lens Diameter:  This is the second number in let's say an 8x40 pair of birding binoculars.  This signifies the diamater of the objective lens in millimeters.  Light enters the binocularts through the objective lens.  The larger the lens, the greater the lens can gather light, and the brighter the image will be.  The larger the lens, the heavier the binoculars, the smaller the diamater, the lighter the binoculars.  Wider lenses will provide more light, cost more, and will be heavier in weight.

Exit Pupil:  This is the diamater of light in millimeters that is visible through the binoculars.  To determine the exit pupil size, divide the objective lens diameter by the magnification power.  8x40 binoculars would have an exit pupil rate of 5 while a pair of 8x32 binoculars would have an exit pupil rate of 4.  To see this, hold your pair of binoculars with the eye pieces toward you.  You will see a small circle of light lin each eyepiece.  This circle of light is magnified as it enters your eye.  The larger the exit pupil, the brighter the image will be. In selecting a good pair of bird watching binoculars, consider and exit pupil measurement between 4 and 7 millimeters.   For this reason pocket binoculars are not the best choice for biring in low-light conditions.

Prism Design are in two types Roof vs Porro:

Roof-Prism binoculars have a slim and stream-lined shape.  The prisms in roof-prism binoculars overlap with each other, and are in line with the eye pieces.  Roof-prism binoculars are pricier, but Roof-prism binoculars are more rugged and durragle that porro-prism binocualrs.

Porro-prism binoculars are the stereotypical binocular design.  Porro-prism binoculars have two right-angled prisms in each barrel.  The advantages are faster and close focussing with brighter images and a wider field of view.  While porrp-prism binoculars are less expensive than roof-prism binoculars, they are heavier and bulkier.

Eye Relief:   If your wear eyeglasses, eye relief is an important feature for you.  this is the distance in millimeters between the ocular lens of the binoculars and your eye.  If you wear thincker glasses eye relief of 16-18 would be a good choice.  If you wear small close fitting glasses, an eye relief of 14-15 will be the right choice.
