Tripods vary in available features and price.  A tripod is a long-term investment.  Tripods come in a variety of makes, sizes, and prices.  Will you be using the tripod to directly mount a camera or a spotting scope?  When selecing a tripod, there are serveral features you will need to consider such as stability or rigidity, quick release, height, compactness, controls that are easily managed by you.

Stability or Rigidity:  For good photography, the tripod must be stable and stand rigidly in place   The heavier the tripod, the stronger and stablier the tripod will be. 

Height:  Never rely on the center extension pole in the middle of the scope to attain the proper level of height.  You will be shooting images at eye-level.  You should select a tripod that reaches your eye level.         

Compactness:  The tripod shoud be compact in size and be able to be folded  and placed in a container that can easily fit into your back-pack in the trunk of the car or be easily carried as carry-on on an airline flight.                                                                             

Quick Release:  The tripod should allow you to quickly atach the camera body to the tripod and should allow you to quicly remove the camera from the tripod head.

Controls that make sense:  Select a tripod with controls that are easy to manipulate at a moment's notice even with your eyes closed.
